Harley Davidson Softail

Harley Softail Overview

Harley Softails are motorcycles from which the suspension can be removed. In its place, shock absorbers that are positioned underneath the transmission provide support on the road. Since Harley Davidson introduced its softail in 1984, the line has grown to include 7 distinct models. The are the FXSTB Night Train, FXSTC Softail Custom and Deluxe, the FLSTF Fat Boy, FLSTC Heritage Softail, FXCW Rocker, and the Rocker Custom. These bikes are more powerful than their Sportster brethren and have an almost sinister appearance due to their dark profile.

A Closer Look At The Softail

Each of the Softail bikes features a 1584cc Twin Cam air-cooled engine and a 6-speed Cruise Drive transmission. The foot controls are forward mounted on each model and the low seat keeps the rider near the ground. These bikes have a unique look about them because of their displaced suspension.

The Softail Night Train has a powertrain that is almost completely black. The front wheel measures 21 inches and the rear tire is a brawny 200mm, allowing the forward foot controls to give the rider an intimidating look. The Softail Custom gives the rider a unique profile with the feet stretched out and the hands held high. Like the Night Train, the Softail Custom also has the 200mm rear tire, giving it the distinct look for which Softails have become known. Meanwhile, the Softail Deluxe sports plenty of chrome and includes a luggage rack with full-length footboards.

The Fat Boy has become instantly distinguishable from other bikes in the Softail line-up. Its bullet hole wheels and ample chrome have become a Harley Davidson icon. By contrast, the Heritage Softail doesn't have the aggressive look of the other models in the series. Instead, it was built for comfort. With huge leather saddlebags and a generous windshield, the Heritage has a nostalgic feel about it.

The 2 Softail Rocker motorcycles make a slightly different statement. The huge 19-inch front wheels use a simple, yet aggressive 5-spoke design. Both have meaty 240mm rear tires. While the Standard Rocker's engine is silver powder-coated, the Rocker Custom's is black powder-coated and stands out with chrome covers.

The Softail design offers an aggressive engine that provides plenty of horsepower and torque. The unique placement of the shock absorbers under the transmission gives these bikes an appearance that is reminiscent of the classic hardtails. While not as popular as the Sportster, the Softails have developed legions of devoted fans.
