Harley Sportster Overview

Launched in 1957, the Harley Davidson Sportster has become a fan favorite. Its unbridled power and versatility have captured the imaginations of bikers for decades. Today, the Sportster line is comprised of 7 models: XL 883, XL 883L, XL 883C, XL 1200N, XL 1200L, XL 1200C, and the XL 1200R. While they look similar to the raw-powered beasts of the past, these bikes have evolved into forgiving machines that are easy to handle and fun to ride.

Sportster Specs

The size and power of the Sportster engines range from 883cc to 1200cc. Each of the engines on the 883 models are silver powder-coated while the 1200 models are black powder-coated. All of the motorcycles in the Sportster line-up use V-twin engines to give them the characteristic Harley Davidson roar while sharing a die-cast casing with 5-speed transmissions.

The XL 883 sports the low-rise handlebar, mid-mount foot controls, and the Classic solo seat. The XL 883L boasts a front and rear suspension that have been lowered, adding to the comfort of the reduce-reached seat and handlebars. Plus, the shocks in the back and the forks in the front have an extremely low profile. The Sportster XL 883C has a larger 4.5-gallon tank (the other 883 models have 3.3-gallon tanks) and the suspension has been recalibrated. Low-profile shocks in the rear promise an exciting ride.

The 1200 models are bigger and more powerful. The XL 1200L provides a fender in the front that hugs the tire while the fuel-injected engine offers aggressive acceleration. Like the 883C, the 1200L's suspension has been recalibrated. The Sportster 1200C, with predominant glistening chrome, has the same engine as the 1200L, but comes with a lighter rear wheel. Meanwhile, the XL 1200R has a high-mount tachometer, a 4.5-gallon tank, and triple disc brakes. Finally, the XL 1200N (called the Nightster) has a solo seat that keeps the biker close to the road. It uses the smaller 3.3-gallon tank and boasts Harley's lowest-profile shocks and forks.

The Harley Davidson Sportster has developed a reputation for its muscle and spirit. Owners often claim the Sportster is their favorite bike from the Harley Davidson inventory. It's also one of the least expensive, providing a memorable ride for the budget-conscious biker.
