Harley Davidson VRSC Overview

In the late 1990's, Harley Davidson set out to create a motorcycle that could stand up to the muscle bikes that were being built by Japanese and American companies. In 2001, they launched their response: the V-Rod. While the VRSC line-up has included several models, 3 are currently in production: the V-Rod, Night Rod, and the Night Rod Special. A fourth model, the V-Rod Muscle, is planned for 2009. Together, these bikes stand apart from the rest of Harley Davidson's inventory. They are sleeker than other models and are designed for high-performance in competitive settings.

The Revolution Begins

The VRSC motorcycles use a different engine than other Harley Davidson bikes. Partnering with Porsche, Harley Davidson created the Revolution engine, a 1250cc liquid-cooled machine that integrates overhead cams and fuel injection. While the engine's displacement is less than that offered by the Touring, Softail and Dyna bikes, it can generate 125 horsepower and up to 85 ft. lbs. of torque. The engine is equipped with 4 valve heads and works seamlessly with the 5-speed transmission. The entire unit is rubber-mounted and encased in a smooth hydroformed steel frame, giving it an elegant appearance that hints at savagery.

Each of the 3 bikes in the 2008 VRSC line-up has been furnished with a new slipper clutch. This clutch reduces the strain put on the drivetrain while the rider downshifts (especially useful while decelerating to navigate sharp corners). An optional anti-locking feature has been added to all 3 models that integrates with the advanced Brembo brakes that are standard on the VRSCs.

The VRSC Bikes

The classic V-Rod puts the rider 26 inches from the pavement with a 19-inch front wheel and a muscular 18-inch, 240mm rear tire. With a 2-tone paint scheme of silver and charcoal, the V-Rod has a look that is both refined and aggressive. The Night Rod is darker and more sinister. Black and chrome are prominent, matched with the same 26-inch seat found on the V-Rod. The dual-exhaust is also laced in chrome, blending well with the polished black veneer.

Finally, the Night Rod Special takes the dark theme of the Night Rod a step further. Much of the chrome has been covered with black, giving the bike a nasty, menacing appearance. With a seat that is just 25.2 inches from the ground, the Night Rod Special is the lowest of the VRSC bikes. It comes with the same chunky 240mm rear tire found on the V-Rod and has forward mounted foot controls with a drag style handlebar.
